Expand .xip Archives with xip -x
Extract Apple's signed .xip packages (like Xcode) from the Terminal.
Run xip -x archive.xip --directory ~/Applications to extract a .xip file and verify its signature automatically.

Command
$ xip -x ~/Downloads/Xcode_16.xip --directory ~/Applications02What it does
Apple distributes some large developer software as .xip — a signed archive whose signature is verified during expansion, guaranteeing the contents weren't tampered with. Archive Utility can also open .xip files, but the xip command lets you choose the output directory and see verification progress in the Terminal. Expanding a multi-gigabyte Xcode .xip takes several minutes.
03Risk
!Warning: Signature verification is the whole point of .xip — don't bypass or ignore a verification failure; a failed check means the file is corrupted or modified. Make sure the destination has enough free space for the uncompressed app.
04Undo
✓No undo needed — this command does not change persistent state.
