Run `whois example.com` for the full record, or pipe it through `grep -iE 'registrar|expir|name server'` to see just the key fields.

01Command

Command
$ whois example.com | grep -iE 'registrar|expir|name server'

02What it does

The whois protocol returns a wall of text including boilerplate and disclaimers; grepping for `registrar`, `expir`, and `name server` surfaces the fields you actually care about. Expiry dates are handy before renewals, and nameservers confirm whether a DNS change has propagated to the registry. For an IP instead of a domain, `whois 1.2.3.4` shows the owning network and abuse contact.

!Warning: Whois servers throttle aggressive querying — if you script bulk lookups, add delays or you'll get rate-limit errors instead of data.
