Check Domain Registration with whois
macOS ships whois natively — query registrars for ownership, expiry, and nameserver data.
Run `whois example.com` to pull registry records, following the IANA referral chain automatically.
01Command
Command
$ whois example.com
# Strip legal boilerplate:
whois -h whois.iana.org example.org | grep -Ei "registrar|expir|name server"02What it does
macOS's whois automatically chases the referral chain from IANA to the authoritative registrar, so a plain `whois example.com` usually returns full records without extra flags. The output tells you when a domain expires, which nameservers it uses, and whether it is locked — all useful when debugging a broken zone or buying a domain. For TLDs that throttle queries, the `-h` flag lets you point at a specific whois server.
03Risk
!Warning: Some registries (notably parts of .com resellers) return heavily redacted or rate-limited results; a referral to the registrar server may be needed.
04Undo
✓No undo needed — this command does not change persistent state.
