Check Time Machine's Latest Backup with tmutil
Two tmutil queries answer 'is Time Machine working?' — status shows the running state, latestbackup the newest backup.
01Command
$ tmutil status && tmutil latestbackup02What it does
tmutil status reports whether a backup is running, how much has been copied, and whether the destination is available. latestbackup prints the timestamped directory inside Backups.backupdb or the sparsebundle for network destinations; its date is your real 'last backed up' moment. If latestbackup returns nothing, no backup has ever completed to the current destination — a red flag worth checking monthly rather than after a disk dies.

✓No undo needed — this command does not change persistent state.
