Reset the Launchpad layout on Mac

Restore Launchpad to its default, alphabetically sorted icon grid.

macOSFinderdefaultsMedium risk
Run the command below — Launchpad rebuilds its database and returns to the factory layout with stock apps on the first page.

01Command

Command
$ defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool true && killall Dock

02What it does

Launchpad remembers icon positions in a database the Dock maintains. Setting ResetLaunchPad to true and restarting the Dock wipes that database, so apps re-sort alphabetically and Apple's built-in apps claim the first page again. Use it after experimenting with layout hacks or when the grid looks scrambled. There is no direct undo — simply drag icons into the order you want afterwards.

✓No undo needed — this command does not change persistent state.

Evidence: The ResetLaunchPad flag in com.apple.dock makes the Dock rebuild Launchpad's database on next start, restoring the default alphabetical grid.
