Merge PDFs with the Built-in Automator join Tool
Concatenate PDF files in order using macOS's hidden Combine PDF Pages binary.
Run the join tool inside Combine PDF Pages.action with -o output.pdf followed by the files to merge.
01Command
Command
$ "/System/Library/Automator/Combine PDF Pages.action/Contents/MacOS/join" -o ~/Desktop/merged.pdf file1.pdf file2.pdf02What it does
macOS has shipped a ready-made PDF merger for years — it is just buried inside an Automator action. Quote the full path because the folder name contains spaces. List input files in the order you want them appended. The tool runs silently and writes merged.pdf when done.
03Risk
!Warning: If macOS updates move the action, check the path with ls first; merging encrypted PDFs without the password fails.
04Undo
✓No undo needed — this command does not change persistent state.
05Sources
- find – Walk a file hierarchyEvidence: The join binary inside the Automator action uses CoreGraphics via Python to concatenate PDFs; verify it exists with ls "/System/Library/Automator/Combine PDF Pages.action/Contents/MacOS/".
- Preview a file with Quick Look on MacEvidence: Apple ships PDF merging as an Automator action; the join tool is the same engine exposed to the shell.
