Make an iPhone Ringtone (.m4r) with afconvert
Convert any audio clip into the .m4r ringtone format using macOS's built-in afconvert.
Run afconvert -f m4af -d aac -b 128000 clip.m4a MyTone.m4r to create a ringtone file you can add in Finder.
01Command
Command
$ afconvert -f m4af -d aac -b 128000 clip.m4a MyTone.m4r02What it does
An iPhone ringtone is simply an AAC audio file in an M4A container renamed to .m4r, so macOS's built-in afconvert does the whole job. First trim your clip to 40 seconds or less (ringtones cannot be longer), then convert it. Drag the resulting .m4r onto your iPhone in Finder to install it.
03Risk
!Warning: Ringtones must be 40 seconds or shorter — longer files will not sync. The -b 128000 bitrate keeps quality high while staying compatible.
04Undo
✓No undo needed — this command does not change persistent state.
