Extract a Video Frame as a Thumbnail with ffmpeg

Grab one still frame at any timestamp and save it as a JPEG from the command line.

Seek with -ss before -i, then limit output with -frames:v 1 and write to a .jpg filename.

01Command

Command
$ ffmpeg -ss 00:00:10 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 -q:v 2 thumbnail.jpg

02What it does

-frames:v 1 stops after decoding the first frame, and putting -ss before -i makes ffmpeg seek directly to the timestamp instead of decoding everything before it, so the whole job takes well under a second. -q:v 2 is a high JPEG quality (lower is better on the 1-31 qscale). Drop the -ss to take a frame at 0:00, or add -vf scale=320:-1 to shrink the thumbnail in the same pass.

    Evidence: Recommends placing -ss before -i for fast input seeking, which is what makes single-frame thumbnail extraction near-instant.
